The Story of Guardian Angel Catholic Parish

The story of Guardian Angel Catholic Parish begins on July 26, 1959 when 27 people representing 15 families met at the home of Jack and Ruth Helstowski on Atlantic Boulevard in Los Angeles to plan the formation of a catholic mission on the West Coast with the declared intention to be part of the P.N. Catholic Church.

At its third organizational meeting, this small group elected its first Parish Committee. At this meeting, the committee made a telephone call to Rev. Clement Sienkiewicz at the P. N. Catholic Parish in Washington, D.C., and invited Fr. Sienkiewicz to serve as the parish priest of this newly formed mission. The first Holy Mass at the Guardian Angel P.N. Catholic Mission was celebrated by Rev. Clement Sienkiewicz on September 6, 1959.

It was on October 15, 1963 that this small group of Polish people purchased its own house of worship at 1118 N. Commonwealth Ave., Los Angeles, California. The beautiful Spanish – styled church building was the former Hollywood Church of the Nazarene. The first Holy Mass in Guardian Angel’s new home was celebrated on Sunday, November 7, 1963 by Rev. Edward Kalata, its new pastor. Together with Rev. Edward Kalata, the parishioners remodeled the church completely, and went on to construct a new parish hall in July of 1968. The Parish’s long tenured Pastor, Father Kalata, served Guardian Angel from 1963 until 1998, 35 years.

In 2004/2005 the Parish was served for 6 months by a supply priest, Rev. John Druther. Since June 1, 2005 Guardian Angel Catholic Parish is served by Father Andrew Machowski.

With thanksgiving to God for the struggle and sacrifices of the priests and many parishioners we have this wonderful church in Los Angeles.

In 2009 the parish had the opportunity of celebrating its 50th Anniversary. On January 1, 2009 the Parish began its Anniversary celebrations with a special Holy Mass of Thanksgiving for the intention of all those who created, built, and supported our Parish through the 50 years of it existence, celebrated by Fr. Andrew Machowski. Our Anniversary year was special for the whole community, and was graced with hands, hearts, and minds filled with new ideas for projects to improve the image of our parish in both a spiritual and material sense. The strong dedication of Fr. Andrew has lead us to be the close spiritual family that we are now.

The visitation of our Diocesan Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Anthony Mikovsky on October 18, 2009 was the most important day in our Anniversary year, and we are grateful to our Bishop Anthony for his prayers. Bishop Anthony presided over and offered the Sacrament of Confirmation for our students, and also offered his time and very friendly attitude.

With the help of Almighty God, the contribution of our ancestors, many good hearts, the work and generosity of our parishioners and friends, the prayers of our members, and the dedication of Bishop Bernard and Fr. Andrew, we joyfully look toward the bright future of our Parish.

On March 10, 2013 Bieshop Bernard Nowicki confirmed 18 Students from the 2013 Confirmation Class, and we celebrated the Bishop's visit with a dinner after the mass.  Alphibetically by name the 2013 Confirmation Class is:  Samantha Arriola, Priscilla Asturiano, Jason Braun, Edith Escalante, Erika Escalante, Maria Flores, Irma Flores, Maritza Jarquin, Linda Lorenzo, Tanya Mendoza, Gadi Ordonez, Mirna Pena, Zoila Posadas, Alvaro Quezada, Selma Ramirez, Jose Reyes, Sandra Sanchez, and Karla Soltero.
